Vedauwhat? Gillwho?

Only hours after first meeting Chuck Fryberger, I remember watching him sprint downhill, jump left foot off a 2 foot boulder, in stride, re-launch his right foot off of the sheer face of another boulder, and launch way over my head to a distant hold, 15 feet up a blank boulder in Vedauwoo. He was wearing one Teva sandal and one climbing shoe. I didn't know what the hell to think of it. Is this Climbing? Track and Field? Basketball? Or something totally different? All I knew was that i was so fucking excited to be a spectator, and that i had never cheered so hard for anything.

Later that evening, over many beers at the now closed Backyard Climbing Gym, I got the "Gill" lecture from Chuck. It was about opening your mind to visions, ideas, and moves previously thought "taboo or undo-able", and how this is how John Gill had envisioned the future of the sport. It was the first time Chuck gave me the speech, but it certainly wasn't the last. I have seen Chuck do many things "undo-able" since.
